Location : Cottenham Day : Wednesday Start Date : 18th January 2012 Time : 7.00-9.00pm Weeks : 10 Price : £80(full)/£60 (concess) Brief Description This will not be a dry and dusty course but will be a light, informative, enjoyable, progression from idea to conclusion, albeit in a dry and slightly dusty workshop. We provide the use of a brand new, top quality, extensively equipped carpentry workshop, where you can design and make any woodwork, carpentry, furniture project of your choice. If you prefer you can work on learning or developing woodworking skills. We are delighted to help you realise your own idea or we can jointly devise a solution to your requirements. Your aspirations are limited only by your imagination, your budget and space. Please note that you should be prepared to transport your project to and from the college. Please consider this when you choose your project. There is no expectation of any prior level of skill whether you are a complete beginner or expert. You may choose whether you wish to be taught or just supervised to use the facilities. If there is any interest we might get to use other facilities to try other skills. Health and safety are a prime concern in all procedures. Learning outcome: This is vocational course with no official certificates, awards etc. The learning outcomes include practical understanding of: Safe working Practices Measurement and planning of product. Devising a practical programme of making to suit your product. Producing a sketch quality workshop drawing. Test joint making, if required. Marking out. Cutting and preparing materials. Joint making. Assembly. Finishing - sanding, surface finishes. Extra costs on the course : You will need to supply your own materials, accessories, paints etc. We do not have a retail outlet for materials. We will devise cutting lists to submit to timber yards or trade suppliers. What you need to bring to the first session : Ideas. Some idea of whether you are here to learn skills or to make something. Any plans you may have. Any sketches or photos of the sort of thing you mght want to make. Any measurements of the space you intend to place your project. Any measurements of items you might wish to place inside your project. Pencils paper. A dust apron, coat, light overall or work clothes. How progress & success will be recorded : If you choose to keep a work diary for your own review, we can assist in providing access to relevent work sheets. Design work and work drawings will be encouraged and considered necessary to record decisions and changes etc. On completion of the course, what might your next steps be : You may consider doing a similar or the same course to develop further skills or to work on another project. Alternatively if you chose to you may continue into further education to gain qualifications towards possible employment.
